The Scent of Steamed Rice
My, a 17-year-old student, is devastated to discover she is pregnant unexpectedly. Too young to undergo a legal abortion, she turns to Dao—a middle-aged woman who became a mother at a young age and now operates as an underground abortion broker—to forge the necessary documents and bypass hospital procedures. For Dao, this work is both a livelihood and a way to "help" young girls avoid repeating her own mistakes. While waiting for her turn, My is haunted by the loudspeaker calling out names and the images of children displayed on the hospital walls. Her inner turmoil intensifies when her mother, unaware of the situation, criticizes a neighbor's daughter for an out-of-wedlock pregnancy, leaving My feeling cornered. Torn between pressure from Dao, her own fear, and the confusion of young love, My begins to question her decision. Ultimately, she flees the hospital, breaks down in tears, and confesses the truth to her mother on her birthday. Her mother is shocked but, instead of scolding her, embraces her daughter. Later, during breakfast, as the television reports Dao’s arrest, the mother embraces My’s unborn child with maternal love, and the family happily reunites.
